Our electric system is built to withstand the heavy winds and rain. But no matter how much we prepare, some outages are inevitable. When outages do occur, many North Alabama Electric Cooperative members temporarily use portable generators.
- If you plan to use a portable generator during storm season, keep these guidelines in mind to ensure the safety of both you and your loved ones.
- Only install a generator in a dry, well-ventilated area. If stored outdoors, check all electrical components before use.
- Do not operate a generator in an enclosed area.
- Keep the generator away from cigarettes, fires, stray sparks or anything that could ignite the fuel.
- Store fuel in an approved safety can and in a protected area.
- Always follow the instructions provided by your generator’s manufacturer for safe operation.
- Do not connect a generator to your home circuits without the help of a certified electrician. Improper installation could ruin your generator and endanger the lives of others.
- Make sure extension cords are sized for the proper load and distance.
- Never connect your generator directly to your electrical panel, which can cause serious injury and damage if power is restored while your generator is operating.
- Keep children, pets and livestock away from an operating generator.
